Healthy Workforce Tip: Ready, Set, Climb

Take the stairs. It’s easy to do and usually faster than waiting for an elevator. Walking up the stairs can burn up to 200 calories in just 20 minutes.

  • Stair climbing burns more calories per minute than jogging.
  • Stair climbing builds muscle mass in the legs and can keep your heart and lungs in good shape.

Lose 10 in '10

Lose 10 in '10

In 2010, we want to see you THRIVE. Obesity in America and specifically in Orange County is on the rise. Studies continually have shown that a sedentary lifestyle and being overweight are among the primary risk factors for many health problems. This is why we want to encourage our employees and physicians to adopt a healthy lifestyle, because when we thrive, so do our members, our communities, and our organization.

Last month, First Lady Michelle Obama unveiled a new initiative aimed at combating the nation’s obesity epidemic. Locally, to help you achieve a healthier you, KP Orange County is launching a Lose 10 in ’10 (2010) campaign to encourage our employees and physicians to practice what we preach. We want to create a culture of health and fitness in Orange County. To support these efforts, a local THRIVE Community Health Team has been created to provide you with access to the necessary tools to accomplish your fitness and health related goals.

The team is currently working on several initiatives including working with our physicians to improve our use of Exercise Vitals in HealthConnect—sending a clear, consistent message that exercise is an essential part of healthy living. A FIT Festival and physical challenge is being organized to get you ready for summer, promoting physical activity in the medical centers and MOBs. The group is also seeking further discounts from our local program sponsors. You will be hearing more on these and other initiatives throughout the year. Stay tuned!

There’s no better time to begin taking control of your health. You can start in your own facility by taking the stairs whenever possible, making healthier meal choices or teaming up with colleagues to walk at lunch or after work. Visit www.getfitkpoc.org to learn more.

GET FIT OC TIP: Register on kp.org and take a health risk assessment or participate in one of our online Healthy Lifestyle Programs. Remember, this is one of our 2010 PSP/VPP goals.
